Escape from the real world?

A few days ago somebody became a millionaire in real life by doing business in Second Life.

What is Second Life?

Second Life is a virtual world created by Linden Lab. It’s “a 3D online digital world”, and it’s extremely popular. As of right now Second Life has 1,678,106 “residents” who spent $653,939 the last 24 hours. I’m not one of them, and I prefer calling them “gamers”.

Somebody oughta get out more

I saw the worlds first “embedded journalist” James Wagner at Knock Knock 2006, and I was quite fascinated. Stuff is really happening when a online game generate enough news to make the developers hire a reporter to keep themselves and the community updated.

The scary slogan

The Second Life slogan is “Your World. Your Imagination.” And guess what – you can actually pass that exact slogan on to your real life! I’m very much liable to believe that you will be way better off using your imagination, time and presence in the real world.

Combining mIRC, Sims and dating is a sure thing

Second Life is like an extreme mIRC Sims dating website. Separately the three have their individual attraction power but combined in the form of Second Life the effect is enormous.

I can see why. But it’s still crazy.

The Matrix is coming?

I can’t help thinking that the majority of Second Life gamers are nerdy folks who has no real substance in life. Some are effective businessmen experimenting with a new and growing medium, but what about the rest? The actual population? They’re just puppets on a string looking for a life online instead of living in our world of today.

Second Life is the real The Matrix. Some say “the future of internet” meaning a virtual world where everyone is present. In my opinion it’s escape from reality to a better you and a better world. Second Life is mostly successful because people nowadays lack personal relationships.

Amazed or scared?

Nonetheless, virtual worlds are here to stay. Actually the number of “residents” in Second Life is now 1,678,098 – that’s a decline of 8 people since I started writing this article. A trend maybe?

You want the blue or the red pill?

I honestly can’t figure out whether to be amazed or scared? If you can earn a fortune by selling stuff in a virtual world that world has huge potential. On the other hand – something is twisted here. Somebody is using(waisting?) an awful lot of time in Second Life instead of living in First Life.
