Social butterfly at Perth Massive

Last Tuesday I went to Perth Massive at The Brass Monkey in Northbridge. Perth Massive is a one-night adventure where the digital media industry in Perth meet for an “end of year celebration”.

It’s primarily a social thing, and since I’m the new guy in town I was there to throw business cards at just a bought anyone who’s something in the local web industry.

Meeting nice people

It was a blast. Bernie introduced my to James who’s brain i picked all night. Thanks James – you’re the man. While enjoying the free beer I got introduced to Kirsty and Jenna who where jolly but still all about business. Like me. At the balcony I met the diamond personality of Sonya.

Presentations

In between persona’s I had the doubtful pleasure of a mime show presumably advertising sponsors of Massive. I couldn’t hear a thing, because there was no microphone. An awful shame since I believe several had clever words for us. Among them was represent for the great Port80 community, which have already proven to be a source of business contacts to me.

Gifts bring in the crowd

In the midst of it there were a handout of different prizes. Main prize was a complete Adobe Suite set, and I didn’t win.

Event format

In my opinion the “free beer concept” brought in a lot of students from a all kinds of digital media educations. I think Perth Massive should consider a registration fee.

Registration fee advantages:

The great thing about a registration fee is that it brings in people who wants to invest in the event. They want value for money, and therefore expect and invest a lot more. That’s good news for everybody attending.

Naturally students would have a discount, but there would always be a registration fee. Keeping it real you know.

Social butterfly

Despite the nagging above I think Perth Massive was a great event. I missed some academic content, but all in all it was fun and well worth my time since I got to say hello to a lot of interesting personalities from the local web community.
